History About Yamunotri
Legend has it that Asit Muni, a wise man, lived in this area as a hermit. He took daily baths in the Ganges and the Yamuna throughout his life. Being unable to travel to Gangotri in his old age, a Ganges movement was seen as being in opposition to Yamunotri for him.
The Champasar Glacier (4,421 m), located directly beneath Banderpoonch Mountain, is the source of the Yamuna, the daughter of the Sun deity Surya and cognizance, Sangya. As Kalind is one of Surya’s higher names, the mountain next to the river source is dedicated to her father and known as Kalind Parvat. The Yamuna is known for her frivolity, a quality that she developed because, according to a popular myth, the mother of the Yamuna preferred to avoid making eye contact with her stumbling husband.

About Yamunotri Temple
At a height of 3,291 metres, Yamunotri Temple is set up within the western Garhwal Mountains. Within the 19th century, the temple was constructed by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur. The river Yamuna is worshipped in the temple as a silver symbol that Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal rebuilt and decorated with wreaths.

How To Reach
